Prep for seeding lawn on difficult soil

Hi, I want to grow a nice new lawn on top of what is currently a very patchy lawn with large area of just earth, no grass. But the soil is really muddy/sticky/sludgy at the moment, and also quite dense and clayey. April is a wet month so I can’t see it drying out any time soon. But May might be a bit late for sowing. I have bought some hardy grass seed which has very good reviews, but I’m not sure how well it will grow in this clayey sludge. I could add topsoil but am concerned that the minute it rains, it will just sleep into the sludge beneath it. Not sure how to tackle this… any advice?

Horticultural sharp sand. Buckets of it. Spike the ground all over with a garden fork and sweep the sand into the holes. The best time to do it is autumn, but if it is in that bad a state, now is better than waiting.
