Help me nurture a strawberry plant please

A friend gave me one but I'm so bad with plants. They just die.
I'd like to plant it in a pot outside. Could someone help me please? Is there a particular type of compost that's good?
Any other tips please?

You’d really struggle to kill a strawberry plant, they’re pretty indestructible 😂 pop it in the pot with normal compost, don’t expect much fruit this year and when it starts putting out runners poke the end of the runner (watch a video on YouTube) into the compost next to the plant and you’ll get free plants. Second year strawberry plants fruit much better!

Thanks @mmmmmchocolate that's reassuring! I'll look at YouTube for the poking whatsit. Do I need to protect it from birds or anything when the strawberries grow? We have so many birds around here.

If you have a problem with birds, then yeah probably. Even the little birds (and slugs and squirrels) will fight you for your strawberries 😂

That's why you need to put straw under it, stops the slugs

You need more than one ideally.

Our strawberries mostly got eaten by slugs last year. Agree they seem quite hardy, I'm a crap gardener and put plant is still alive!
