Patio and similar around cherry tree

We have a cherry tree with a few roots heading towards the surface. We need to lay a patio or similar in that area and don't want to lose the tree. Ideally don't want to have to gravel the full area. What ideas are we missing?

Decking? Can be raised slightly so gives the roots some room.

You can also lay the patio on sand, so when the roots inevitably lift a paving slab you can take it up, remove some of the sand and re-lay it level without having to do anything else.

You'd want a fairly thick layer of sand for that.

Choose slabs that are easy to clean!

Thank you! I shall look into the patio on sand option as if it works that could be ideal
