Idiot proof potted flowers - geraniums?

Cinnamonamonamon · 12/03/2024 11:48

I want to plant some flowers in pots to put at the front of my house. I cannot garden. I am the opposite of green fingered and kill everything.

I just want something to brighten up my front garden and cover up the shrubbery which itself covers up my bins (mid terrace so can't put bins anywhere else)!

Can anyone advise please? Someone said Geraniums are hard to kill and look nice

How much sun do you get there?

They are just summer bedding plants, but are easy to look after and won't immediately keel over if you forget to water them for a day or so.

They are frost tender though, so won't be in the shops for a few weeks yet.

Petunias and lobelia are easy to grow

By 'geraniums' you probably mean pelargoniums, e.g. https://www.thompson-morgan.com/p/geranium-best-red-f1-hybrid/P4606TM

Yes, they are colourful and generally pest- and disease-free. But frost will kill them if you leave them outside in the winter. They're also of no benefit to bees and butterflies.

Here are a few suggestions; disease- and pest-free, easy to grow, beneficial to wildlife, and the only maintenance is cutting them down when they're 'over':

Verbena Bonariensis (hardy perennial, won't die in winter)
Geranium Rozanne (hardy perennial, a true geranium, i.e. not a pelargonium)
Salvia Amistad (hardy perennial, flowers well into autumn) https://www.gardenersworld.com/plants/salvia-amistad/
Nigella Hispanica (an annual, sow seeds direct in the pot each year, sparsely so you don't have to thin out the seedlings) https://www.stocksandgreen.com/products/nigella-hispanica-white-seeds
Sunflowers (another annual, sow seeds in pots etc, just be sure not to get a HUGE variety, they vary wildly in size)
