Can anyone find me this Dahlia?

I love this Dahlia, sadly mine didn’t survive when I dug them up in winter 22. The tubers were fine, they just never sprouted again last spring. I have been searching for replacements ever since but I can’t find any for sale anywhere, is it just too early? If anyone could find any in stock anywhere I would be very grateful. TIA.

Where did you get it before?

CadyEastman · 09/03/2024 06:54

Simple answer is no. I've had a look and can only find stock photos.

SpringSprungALeak · 09/03/2024 06:59

Sorry, no. Everytime Ivfoubd it listed, it was 'out of stock'

if it were me I'd phone/email all of them to see if they're planning on getting anymore & if so, when.

it is lovely, comes from a NZ breeder.

There are a number of dahlia groups on Facebook where people ask this sort of question all the time, it might be worth a try. If it's not available commercially any more then you might find someone who's got one and would take a cutting for you.

But it might just be gone - my local specialist breeder who had several rare varieties lost a third of their stock in the bad winter two years ago. I phoned them to ask about a lovely soft pink called Dr Caroline Rabbit for which they were the only supplier, and they said that they hadn't even been able to find one for Dr Rabbit herself when she called. I know there are worse things in the world but having a plant named after you and then losing it forever struck me as truly tragic. Not being able to find one for my garden kind of paled into insignificance by comparison.

Where did you get it before?

I got my first one on ‘death row’ reduced in the garden section of Homebase. That lasted 3-4 years and I made a couple of new plants out of it but they eventually died.

I ordered 3 tubers off Thompson and Morgan early 2022, they were terrible quality tbh and struggled to thrive. I suppose I shouldn’t have been surprised when they remained lifeless after replanting last spring.

Thanks everyone, I will keep searching. The dark leaves against the pink were just stunning.

Monty that would be awful, to have one named after you but it now be no more! I’m not a FB user but will ask someone else to look. Thanks.

There might be similar types. I've found one called City of Leiden, which seems to be a bright pink cactus with 'dark flushed' foliage. I also grew one called Orfeo, can't remember if it was the one with bronze leaves. They're both for sale at various places. The pictures don't help, they understandably concentrate on the bloom and, if you're lucky, the leaves will get a passing mention.

Turkeyhen · 09/03/2024 12:49

City of Leiden is a really good shout, I was thinking it looks like Ambition but that has boring green foliage.

SnapdragonToadflax · 09/03/2024 14:43

That was a lucky find in Homebase!

I think a lot of dahlia farmers (and regular gardeners!) lost all their stock in 2022. I know I did, literally every dahlia rotted. Often the ones from US breeders are very difficult to get here, so this might be the same with a NZ breeder.

I'd keep an eye out next autumn in the hope that someone has taken cuttings, and in the meantime look for an alternative. I love that dark foliage on dahlias, so lovely.

CadyEastman · 09/03/2024 17:00

Bishop of Canterbury has dark foliage but I'm not sure if it would be striking enough for you?

YoureWinningAtLife · 10/03/2024 07:32

Thank you all for the suggestions for alternatives, I will have a look and see which ones I’d like to try.
