Has anyone seen a hedgehog yet?

Or is it too early?

I have put food out but there's no sign of them (we have a hedgehog cam, a bit like another poster).

We fed last summer and autumn.. at least one came every night, sometimes up to 4 so was hoping they'd be back.

Probably should have said I'm in the Midlands

No movement from my hedgehog house yet and I normally see him/her every evening when they have woken up.

Pixiedust1234 · 08/03/2024 22:04

Yes. My wildlife camera has shown at least one three nights running, although I do suspect two hedgehogs. I have a hedgehog feeder designed to keep cats out. Allegedly. E.Midlands.

Yes I saw one in the garden last weekend

Choconuttolata · 08/03/2024 22:43

Yes DH has whilst walking the dog at night, it had babies. Also in the Midlands.

Houseplanter · 08/03/2024 23:00

Thank you. So it seems it's not too early for them to be up and about, even though it's still quite cold.

I'll carry on trying to lure them back.

I saw one just before Christmas! It's been such a mild winter I really hope he's manged to get by.

AltitudeCheck · 08/03/2024 23:03

Yes, seeing them now in North Lincolnshire 🦔❤️🦔

Collywobblewobbles · 08/03/2024 23:03

I think the ones are up already are struggling for food, it's still a bit early.
Keep feeding them

littlbrowndog · 08/03/2024 23:05

No and in my pond I have no tadpoles just a newts. Is that the problem

NCForQuestions · 08/03/2024 23:08

Yes, about ten days ago the dog dragged me to the first of the season.

My dog is an absolute hedgehog obsessive. I'd no idea there were so many in my area, but she finds every single one and whines when they are outside and she wants to go out and stalk them 🙄

She's always on a lead so never gets close to them, don't worry!

Mines been leaving me gifts for a few weeks now. I’m in the south east

millymae · 08/03/2024 23:40

We are in the North West and saw our first hedgehog on the camera on 28 January - we put food in a hedgehog house every night and visits were only every couple of days or so until 28 February. Since there has been at least one in the house very night and 2 at the same time on a couple of occasions.

CatsMother66 · 09/03/2024 21:40

I’ve seen a few over the winter but not when the weather gets really cold.
I have seen fresh hedgehog poos in the garden these last few days.
Hedgehogs don’t always hibernate all throughout the winter so you have a good chance of them still visiting. They may wake up for a night or two if hungry or thirsty, some hardly hibernate at all, while others are out for the count for months.
Hibernation is nature’s way of dealing with no food so if food is readily available, there is no need to hibernate. They have been known to be out in the snow. (Although they do tend to go under if it gets icy col)
I’m a volunteer for a hedgehog rescue and it’s been a strange winter this year, so mild that the hogs in my care have not hibernated. Usually if the weather drops, any that I have in my care tend to go into hibernation and do so for a few months)

GCAcademic · 09/03/2024 21:42

Haven’t checked the camera yet, but have seen hedgehog poo in the last couple of days.

TheSpottedZebra · 09/03/2024 21:45

I've also seen the poos, so I need to get my camera back out. With some food.

crackfoxy · 09/03/2024 22:01

CadyEastman · 10/03/2024 11:16
