Pot Plants for dark damp spaces.

Our dining room has door into an alleyway which leads to our garden. It's dark and damp and not very pretty.
It is east facing, but in shadow all of the time.
Are they any plants that will live there in a pot? Maybe ferns? Any suggestions to cheer up the area on a budget?
Thank you.

I've put ordinary houseplants outside in shady spaces during the summer months before. As long as the alleyway isn't like a wind tunnel or the plants get dried out, they will be fine.

For all year round, then yes to ferns.

Oh that's a good idea about the houseplants. It's really sheltered so not at all windy. Thank you.

Hostas? There are many varieties such as variegated leaves, mini ones etc. You do need to protect them from snails, so I lay gravel around the top of the pot. They are often on sale in lidl/aldi and can eventually be divided when larger. Apparently you can eat them too!

Toad lilies will grow in shade, as long as there's some diffused light. I have some in containers in my shady backyard.

Yes, most ferns with thrive, as will Fatsia japonica.

Oh this is brilliant! Thank you. I'm not an experienced gardener, this is the first garden I have ever had - so I am really grateful for all the advice. I shall look up all of these plants.

What you need is an aspidistra.
