Olive tree

Hi all

I have an olive tree very tall about 7ft in a pot I got 2nd hand. However I have a spot in the ground I'd love to fill to give us some privacy, the border I'm going to pop it in doesn't get watered to much as I'm homeless with keeping on top of it and it's very free draining. South facing garden lots of sun, is this a good shout or am I best keeping it in the pot? Thanks!

It’s a good shout to put it in the ground 👍

It should be happy in the ground in a sheltered spot. I have several. They like stoney soil, so if you have very fine soil add a few stones yourself. Feed with Tomorite (spelling?) in the spring.

Given the sunny spot and free-draining soil, your olive tree could thrive there! Just make sure to water it regularly, especially in the beginning. By the way, have you ever considered bonsai trees? They're a fun way to enjoy trees on a smaller scale. Check out this guide at https://bonsaiforbeginners.com/an-introduction-to-bonsai-the-history-art-and-science-behind-growing-bonsai-trees . An olive expert once told me not to stress about olive trees. They live for hundreds of years in very poor soil, in fairly hot and inhospitable parts of the world. I have one that's more than 20 years old now, we had our first 'crop' last year. One single perfect olive😂
