Climber or rambler rose for fence

Hi all

I have a fence in the garden I want to cover the top of, to add height, some privacy and hide the ugly strip of trellis at the top. Am I best off with a rose climber or rambler? I see the ramblers grow quite high .. the fence is about 8 ft high. I'm clueless when it comes to roses but I know I want my garden filled with them haha

Thank you

No not a rambler they only flower once in a season. I bought climbers when I replanted the garden. My favourite is Clare Austin. Flowers continuously all Sumner, seems to avoid rose issues. Strong growth, some scent. Large white creamy flowers.

Ghislane de Feligonde is a lovely repeat rambler. Maybe have a look on the David Austin website or have a look for a local rose nursery who could help you find something you like.

One of my ramblers flowers twice.

The other has a really long flowering period.

Not true, there are repeat flowering ramblers.

There’s a lot to be said for a sweet briar, with leaves giving an appley scent especially after rain. Look for varieties of Rosa rubiginosa, eg Meg Merriless.

An alternative to a repeat flowering rambler is one with extra good hips, eg a variety of Rosa moyesii.

My impression is that ramblers are a lot easier to prune than climbers
