Anyone know what this plant is?

I've been gifted it but I don't know what it is
And there's a funny, almost curry smell in the house, which I'm wondering is from this plant

I think its a type of bromeliad - possibly flaming sword?

Yes, a Bromeliad, maybe Vriesea. They need quite specific care regarding watering, and usually die after flowering, but may produce pups, so Google for more info.

Why on earth would anybody get me a plant, that's complicated to look after?!?

I doubt they would have known about its care requirements, but they aren’t difficult, you usually need to water into the plant’s vase, with rainwater, as they are epiphytes, and grow on trees in habitat.
