Growing vine under polycarbonate pergola roof?

I live in a warm climate and have an unattractive metal pergola with a polycarbonate sheet roof. I need to keep a roof on the pergola, for rainy days and some UV protection.

Can anyone recommend a vine that could survive growing on the pergola under the polycarbonate? A grapevine would be ideal if it could manage the heat under the roof.

Alternatively, as the polycarbonate sheets are old and need to be replaced, can anyone recommend an alternative translucent covering that would be more vine friendly?

Thanks :)

How hot does it get? In principle anything that can grow in a greenhouse can grow there (so almost anything), but if it is in full sun in a very hot climate it might scorch.

Yes, full sun, north facing (southern hemisphere), and we are having a run of 40C days at present, with more to be expected - thanks climate change.

Ouch! If you replace the polycarbonate with some translucent rather than transparent I would still give a grapevine a go - they are hard as nails and you will have airflow underneath I assume.

Thanks, I really would like to give it a try. I might start with just one vine and see how it goes. Next challenge, to fend off the possums and cockatoos from the grapes! :)

You can tie paper bags around them when they are ripening to keep pests away. Possums might be able to get through them though...

Yes my parents used brown paper bags on their vines. I have some good mesh bags that I use for figs which might do the job.
