Mowing a meadowmat lawn

We had a meadowmat lawn put in over the summer. DP mowed it a few times then we left it, however I’ve just been reading we should have done an autumn cut. Should we do it now?

Also I’d like to mow the edges short to sort of create a feature of the meadow in the middle (and put edging around the edges). Can I do that now or wait till spring?

Thanks gardeners!

The whole point of an autumn cut is to have the meadow short for winter and remove anything which would rot down adding nutrients. And also weaken any weeds getting hold.

I don’t see why you can’t do it but I would make sure it’s as dry as it can be and you have really sharp blades. All your perennials will be died back now so you don’t want to rip them out with blunt blades in loose wet soil.

I wouldn’t mow it now. Too wet, and the grass won’t grow over winter.

In the spring, you can mow the whole thing if it’s looking scruffy, then just keep mowing the edges as they grow and leave the middle alone.
