Hello! I have finally found a handy-man who is willing to make me some compost heap containers over the winter in time for next spring. The trouble is, he is asking for written plans and although I know what I want, I don’t trust myself to draw it out properly!

Does anyone know of an on-line source or a book or anywhere I can find such a thing please?

I want three bays under a miniature carport-type roof sort of thing… does anyone have any idea of sizes… construction methods please?

Any tips or pointers would be very gratefully received.

Maybe have a look on pinterest to give you some ideas, ours were made to fit a space, we have three "bins" good luck

Watching with interest - we had an extortionate quote to build something similar (without roof I think - DH was in change), so are looking for comparison quotes for a relatively simple system… There are readymade ones you can buy but the ones we saw were too small.

Thank you everyone. I am very grateful for these pointers.

I was going to go with Charles Dowding’s dimensions but then he mentioned that he needs an enormous quantity of greenery to fill his bins, to the extent that he imports green and brown matter from his neighbours! This rather surprised me as his plot is enormous, like a market garden!

So I think a smaller model made from pallets might be good!

I have no idea if it is true but I have heard/read many people say that a plot of land cannot produce enough compostable matter for itself (so this would be true of a pocket-handkerchief or of a market garden). It seems counter-intuitive to me as you would expect that nature would get the balance right but maybe we demand too much from our soil.
