Droopy prayer plant

I've had a prayer plant for a while, it's grown and flowered but it's completely droopy and has been for ages. I'm spraying it regularly and put a couple of bowls of water near it because I think lack of humidity might be the issue.

Is there any hope for it? Has anyone successfully revived a droopy prayer plant?

When you say droopy, do you just mean angled quite low, or has it also lost texture/firmness? The latter would be more worrying than the former.

A change of angle alone might not be too worrying because prayer plants modify their leaf position according to light.I wondered whether it was getting more light than usual?

Like this. The stems feel quite firm. But I can't imagine them standing up as they're quite long now. It was in a darker room out of direct sunlight and that's where it started drooping..I moved it to the kitchen where I thought it would be more humid.

I know it's on a windowsill but that window actually doesn't get much light as it's in a corner.

Some varieties do trail more than others. Perhaps it is more trailing than drooping? Which might be quite healthy.

Does it look a bit hungry? Getting a bit late in the season for repotting but perhaps you could give it a feed?

Almondmum · 22/10/2023 07:42

I hadn't thought to feed it but I'll give it a try - thank you!

I did repot it in the spring but that didn't help with the droopiness

That's a trailing plant! The new leaves grow sequentially from the stem of the 'previous' leaf. It's not drooping at all, that's just how they are.

Reallybadidea · 22/10/2023 07:52

Those lower leaves are going to need more light though. Do you have a wall near a window where you can hang it? Or hang it from the top of the frame so that it's higher up and gets more light? This is how I've got some of mine

Oh really?! I've always been terrible at keeping house plants alive so I assumed it was my incompetence causing it to trail. It wasn't like that when I got it either.

I love what you've done with yours, I'll see if I can do similar. We actually have got a bare wall next to that window that we want to do something with

This- it’s a trailing plant. It’s a Maranta leuconeura. Many of the photos online where they’re upright are of younger plants, as they grow they start to trail.

Wow thank you! I saw a huge standing up one the other day which made me think I was doing something wrong with mine. Maybe it's just a different type though.

I didn't realise I should be using rain water instead of tap either.

Thanks for saying that - my house plants are my pride and joy!

It looks like you're doing a fine job with your one. Tbh I don't use rainwater either, although I do let fresh tap water sit to bring it up to room temperature at this time of year

Almondmum · 22/10/2023 09:43

Thanks! I've got half a dozen plants I've managed to keep alive for around a year now - an absolute record for me. I was thinking of treating myself to more so I'm going to take inspiration from your wall hangings and do that. I could even get one for the bathroom for the prayer plant

Using rain water is more important if you’re in a hard water area. How often do you need to descale your kettle?

Almondmum · 22/10/2023 11:02

Oh, never. We are in a soft water area. I won't worry about then, thanks!
