Would be appreciated. Friend has a 7ft x 4ft Jasmine that has hidden a fence. Is it ok to cut it back drastically?Has anyone cut one back hard both height and width at this time of year?If so will it flower next year?Thankyou.

I’ve cut back the common summer flowering Jasmine at this time of year. It was part of a tangled hedge and could only be hard pruned outside bird nesting time.
The hard pruning didn’t do the Jasmine any harm as it flowers on the following year’s new growth.
However, winter flowering Jasmine needs to be pruned in the spring, obviously.

Great I'll find out when flowering then cut back hard at the times you suggest.Just don't want to kill it if a -7 winter again. Many thanks.

Is it the sort with bright yellow flowers in winter/early spring? If so, then pruning it now will cut all the flower buds off, so wait until just after it has finished flowering and then do it around about April.

The summer flowering ones are also pruned after flowering, so can be done now if you like.

Thanks it's the common white jasmine so think I'll cut back hard in few weeks when I can get there.
