My cheese plant is taking over

What can I do? My husband thinks it’s awful, out of control and wants it out. I adore it but agree it is taking over. It started tiny and I’m so proud but equally have no where to store it. It really spans the full width of the area it was meant for and gets in the way.

Oh dear, I bought one today...

How it started vs how it’s going.

I have an umbrella plant that's completely out of control. It's too big for the house.. it even looks big out on the patio

I don't really want it tbh.. have considered trying to flog it on marketplace. But can't bring myself to kill it...

Healthkick · 01/10/2023 20:20

he wants to throw it out but I honestly adore it. When it gets a new leaf it makes me so happy. So I compromised and agreed to take it to my office.

I have a similar monstera! Love it 😁 I have it in a stand and have a coco coir pole that I tie any leaves that are speading too much too so it grows a bit more up than out!

Beginningless · 01/10/2023 20:21

My aunt had one in a corner which was ceiling height, I think train it upwards rather than out like pp says

AlwaysFreezing · 01/10/2023 20:22

If you put it on a high up shelf, it will be happy enough to tumble downwards.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 01/10/2023 20:22

Just prune it.

Chop the longest leaves off about an inch below the bend where the aerial root comes out, put them in water and watch them root.

Then plant into other pots and start selling them or giving them away to people.

You get your lovely plant, other people get lovely plants and your husband can knob right off.

How it started vs how it’s going.

I would get a moss stick and tidy it up a bit , it's not as big as I was expecting tbh, my parents had an enormous one when I was a kid! 🤣

Iwishmynamewassheilah · 01/10/2023 20:25

I donated our monster to the local (large) GP practice waiting room. Should say I’m registered there and I did ask first!

Sandrine1982 · 01/10/2023 20:26

I'll take it off your hands!!! Where are you??

JadeVS72 · 01/10/2023 20:27

Pic of mine, possibly still taking over but doing my best with the stand and pole!

I had to rehome mine when he got too big and I miss him. I used to give him fangs and spooky eyes for Halloween and he looked fabulous with all his spooky face leaves. I’ve given him to my sister in law and she’s split him and as far as I know, there are now 2 of him. I’m kind of hoping for a bit back tbh!

Gnomegnomegnome · 01/10/2023 20:38

It’s beautiful, it’s not ‘that’ big. I would stick the husband on market place instead to make more room.

I agree with training it to go upwards.

Tadpolle · 01/10/2023 20:53

I have 2 that both started as little cuttings from the big beast I had to give away for being too enormous. Both are currently putting out new leaves I love it!

I've realised that they don't mind pretty low light so that means they can go anywhere in the house as long as a bit of light reaches them. Indirect light is ok. So I recommend you cram it into a corner. It will squeeze it together a bit and make it more compact and it will grow upwards not out.

LyricalGangsta · 01/10/2023 20:58

Def get it a support pole and gently attach the stems to the pole and it will grow more, yay look neater Grin

Healthkick · 03/10/2023 18:16

followed the advice and got a support pole. Looking so much better. I’m in love!!

It looks beautiful!

FrostHardy · 03/10/2023 21:24

I picked up Bruce in ikea last year and he has literally exploded! I’ve put a support on the biggest plant but the smaller guys are on their own. Ikea tends to sell 3-4 monstera in a single pot and I’m never brave enough to separate them, so they end up looking messy like this! My last one had to be left when we moved countries, so I grabbed the first one I could find when we arrived.

That must be a pretty strong post you are using. Where did you buy it?

(DD bought a useless weak one). The plant laughed in her face and ignored it's propping ability.

bombastix · 03/10/2023 22:14

That is what they do! Where do you think the inspiration for "Day of the Triffids" came from?

The only solution is to embrace the chaos or live it outside for death

AutumnFroglets · 03/10/2023 22:17

My goodness the sharp spike on the end of that! 😱 That certainly looks like it won't be messed with 😂 Thank you!

FrostHardy · 03/10/2023 22:19

It doubles up as a weapon, always handy! 😂

Tadpolle · 04/10/2023 08:51

I love the thumbs up creeping in the edge of your pic! 👍🏼 Hooray for the giant cheeses
