Have I killed my peony????

Attempted to move my peony a few weeks back (wasn’t a hot spell) … took soul with it, planted it shallow…. It has completely withered. I assume i’ve put it into shock? Does anyone know if i’ve completely seen it off or if the root is likely to survive??

so annoyed with myself- it was about 3 years old

Soil. No souls were taken.

Obvious question, but have you been watering it? I'd wait and see what it does, it can sulk for a bit!

Was it still in full leaf?

It’s about the time that they die back anyway but I don’t think there’s anyway to tell until spring. Maybe give it some potash.

Yes it was still in full leaf…. I honestly don’t know what I was thinking!!!!!

I’m having a full battle with bind weed so I wanted to move it out the danger zone and probably panicked!

Don't be so hard on yourself. Sure, there is an ideal time to move plants, but sometimes they just need to be moved! Be patient with it, and see what happens in the spring. Fingers crossed!

Oh my goodness, I read that as you'd killed your pony!😱 So glad no horses have been harmed...🐎

RosaElize · 09/09/2023 20:19

Oh Christ. Souls, dead ponies…. What is going on!!

@ThomasHardyPerennial that’s so kind, fingers crossed

You should always cut back foliage if you’ve moved a plant, they won’t be able to get enough water to support leaves as well as grow new roots. Cut it all off now, keep it watered and give it a good mulch and I’m certain it will come back next year. Probably should have waited a bit longer but plants are resilient.

I bloody love peonies. My absolute favourite.

Commiserations with the bindweed, @RosaElize . I think it has been particularly vigorous this year, got loads at my allotment. Just keep pulling it up 💪

@ThomasHardyPerennial I find the root pull oddly satisfying! I just cannot believe the speed of the stuff, it can whip straight back up in 48 hrs!
