Help- what to plant

Looking for help please.

in process of buying a house with a big garden but it has not 1 plant, flower or tree in it. I don't know where to start. Do I just gif a birder and plant away or plan it out properly? I'm not a gardener either so any advice of type if anything to plan will be helpful. And when to plant.

Plan it properly !
What sort of soil does it have ?
Any soggy spots, or does it all drain well ?
What direction does the garden face ?
Are there any areas you want to hide or give privacy, with a tree ?
Have a look at what the neighbours are growing so you know what will do well.

Thanks, so I know the people before the current owner had vegetables growing there. No idea about type of soil. Seems to drain well. Good thinking about privacy and neighbours- thank you.

Sounds like you may have good fertilised soil then OP! Plan it - it’s the best idea to get the bones of a garden right- but maybe tackle a section at a time. There’s lots of design books - Alan Titchmarsh had one which guides you step by step and if you have the budget there are people who will come up with a design you can then do yourself. You do need to understand your garden soil and aspect/ sunny/shady bits but it’s a fun project. Try to resist the narrow strips of planting round the edges and be honest about how much you want to/ have time to maintain!
