Is this a walnut tree?

Pretty new to gardening and have left the bottom half of the garden to grow wild this summer. Discovered this growing and wondering if anyone can identify this for me? Only one of these things growing on it, can't see anymore on the whole tree, and it's stayed like this for maybe a month or two, no change.

Thanks!

Yes it is. The green walnut buds will change color and texture a bit in the next month or so, till they start to split and open, and you can then get the walnut out.

Check the shell for tiny holes where a grub/worm may already have gotten in, and discard these ones.

Word of warning, wear rubber gloves when getting the walnut out of this green shell, as the sap stains your fingers manky brown for days.

Let the walnuts dry out for a few weeks in their shell

Then enjoy a lovely Tarte au Noix

Ah just noticed you only have one!

Thanks for the reply! I wasn't expecting a walnut tree to be growing in this garden, amazing! Is it normal for only one bud to be growing?

They don’t fruit young, so this may be its first season. It’s just practising.
