What's this tree?

I'm a totally hopeless gardener. This tree has grown massively in the couple of years we've been at this house, and I have no idea what it is. I thought maybe crab apple, but not sure the fruit looks right? Sorry pics aren't great, but if anyone knows, please shout!

Also if anyone does know what it is, do you know when it can be cut back. Its literally doubled in size in two years.

Arbutus - Strawberry Tree

EnglishRose1320 · 13/08/2023 21:50

Thanks, it does look quite like that, just looked it up, not sure the leaves are quite right though.
However I really am hopeless at plant identification.

Can you take a separate picture of one leaf and one fruit?

GertrudeJekyllAndHyde · 14/08/2023 11:57

The fruits don’t look like those on my arbutus, so it would be good to have a clearer picture.

EnglishRose1320 · 15/08/2023 14:05

Thanks for the further replies @GertrudeJekyllAndHyde and @MereDintofPandiculation, will take some pictures of the leaves and fruit individually when I get back from work.

I thought plum but I guess you would have recognised the fruit OP. Can you include a cross section of one of the fruits with there photos?

OwlBasket · 15/08/2023 14:56

THE photos 🤦‍♀️

EnglishRose1320 · 15/08/2023 20:58

More photos as requested, sorry took them before I saw the cross section comment.

Hmm, not much the wiser. Definitely not Arbutus unedo, strawberry tree, both leaves and fruit are wrong. Cornus mas? Leaves are a bit Cornus-like, as are the fruit, but the fruit should be dangling, not sticking out horizontally and the growth pattern looks too tangly.

I s that brown bit at the end of the fruit attached? In which case that’d rule out Cornus mas. Or is it in the background? Any chance of a cross section? And a twig and a shot of the trunk to see the bark?

if the brown bit does belong to the fruit, it could be crab apple, but the leaves are wrong, too strongly veined

YetAnotherSpartacus · 16/08/2023 14:44

The fruit looks like a lilly pilly but the leaves don't.

KeziaOAP · 16/08/2023 14:55

I'm now leaning more to crab apple from the colour/shape of fruit, there are so many different varities.

Bramshott · 16/08/2023 15:03

Most things can be cut back in the autumn or early spring (whichever suits you best). The worst that can happen is that if you do it at the wrong time it will affect the fruits the coming year, but it will bounce back.

EnglishRose1320 · 16/08/2023 17:04

More pics! I'm leaning towards crab apple again.

Will cut back next month I think, its really starting to block the light.

Yes, that’s an apple.

EnglishRose1320 · 16/08/2023 18:28

Thanks for all the help. I feel like such a novice in the garden.

You’ll learn. I’ve been gardening off and n fir over 60 years

MereDintofPandiculation · 16/08/2023 19:48

I’m sure you can understand the typos

Chenford · 16/08/2023 19:53

PlantNet app says Chinese or Siberian crap apple.

Download the free app OP… it’s not foolproof, but it’s very good.

It’s good as a starting point for future research. Not for a definitive answer.

EnglishRose1320 · 17/08/2023 08:24

Thanks, have installed PlantNet and it's 25% sure it's a siberian crab apple. So as you've both said, a good indicator, but not 100%
