It looks very similar to the kleaves of the geum in the front garden, but I haven't planted a geum in the back. Self sown or weed?

Is this a weed?

Probably wood avens.

MereDintofPandiculation · 13/08/2023 15:45

It’s a Geum. Specifically Geum urbanum, Wood Avens. A native wildflower.

Whether it’s a weed depends entirely on whether you want it growing there.

I'd call it a weed. It's a lot of leaf for not much flower. A real non-event.

Bemyclementine · 13/08/2023 18:20

Ah thank you, I thought it looked very like the geum on the front. I might see what it does

I'll tell you what it does. It spreads like buggery, that's what it does, the flowers are very small and nothing to write home about.

I couldn’t have put it better myself

I thought your were asking if it's cannabis

Bemyclementine · 14/08/2023 09:38

@Merapi ah OK, I'll get rid then!

My garden is somewhat.....unkempt. I'm just about keeping on top of the part that this is in though.

Do you not want it growing there? Then it's a weed.

Bemyclementine · 14/08/2023 10:00

I don't know @ButtonSister , I wasn't sure what it was. If its the self seeded geum from my front garden, I'd leave it.

It is either the front-garden geum self seeding or it's not.

If not: It's the wood avens, which we have established is fairly rubbish and invasive.
If it is: then you will already have some self-seeders in the front garden. Bin these unknowns at the back and transplant the knowns from the front.

In summary: either way, get rid.Smile

Thank you, as you can tell, I'm not at all knowledgeable.
