Dahlias still not flowering

I planted them out relatively late (late May) because of the cold Spring. They put on growth slowly but are mostly big healthy plants which I have pinched out. But no flowers or even visible buds. They are in the same position as last year's dahlias which flowered their socks off from June onwards so I know the location is ok. Anyone else still waiting? I've fed them liquid seaweed regularly but wonder if they need something else?

Some of mine have buds, some nothing

The ones I started off in my house are flowering. The ones I put straight in the ground aren’t. I don’t think that’s too unusual - they will get there.

The buds on mine have literally just appeared in the last couple of days, after all the rain we had at the weekend. I think it’s been a strange old year gardening wise, so hang on in there, they may still appear yet!

Half of mine have flowers/have buds, half haven’t. All planted as tubers into pots and then into the beds at the same time.

And of the ones I still have in pots, planted as tubers at the same time, none have buds! I’d expect it to be the other way round.

I still have hope that they’ll flower until October or so, so plenty of time.

My new dahlias have not yet flowered either. The ones replanted from last year just started in the last couple of weeks.

Generally, it's been a far colder summer so far - they'll get there.

Thanks everyone. I agree that the weather has been tricky this year so far and I'm encouraged to hear that others are in the same boat. We have had plenty of rain now but so little warm sunshine. Hopefully we will have lots of flowers (and sun!) soon!

My established dahlias which are south facing (london) have only just budded and I have 2 flowers this week.

The ones planted this year which are north facing have leaves but no flowers.

Thank you - I will stay hopeful 🙂

Mine still not flowered

I've some old ones next to a brick wall in full sun that are flowering. None of the new ones are.

Weepingwillows12 · 19/07/2023 19:25

Yep mine are way behind last year. Overall it's been a bit of a disappointing summer in the garden. Few favourites didn't survive the winter then the lack of rain slowed it all down I think. Things are just starting but have left it too late to find good bedding plants for the gaps. Mostly my errors as didn't water lots just very occasionally. Will go back to growing more inside from seed to start with next year.

Eloweeese · 19/07/2023 20:31

On another note, my salvias are disappointing this year too

ipredictariot5 · 20/07/2023 13:58

Mine are all at different stages despite being planted at the same time. Don’t worry when they take off they are like triffids and seem to double in size overnight ! Have you pinched out as that stimulates growth I find

The ones planted this year which are north facing have leaves but no flowers.

So I now have 3 flowers blooming in the front one bush, and one about to flower in the other bush. It’ll probably open tomorrow just before the promised deluge of rain.

No buds on the new bushes at the back.
