Why is my honeysuckle dying in the middle?

The inside of my poor honeysuckle is looking very sad for itself. The newer stems are looking absolutely fine, but it looks pretty dead in the middle. What am I doing wrong?

It would benefit from a severe pruning. It’s almost impossible to kill, but doesn’t produce much on the old wood.
Over the winter I cut down an 8ft tangle of ancient honeysuckle, to the ground. It’s still sprouting up through the soil.

It’s always trying to climb to get out of the top into the sunshine, hence new growth at the top and a lot of woody stuff behind

Thank you so much both! I did give it quite a good prune in the winter, but I'm suspecting not hard enough! Good to know its almost impossible to kill!
