What’s wrong with my hydrangea…and what’s this other plant?

The hydrangea is in more or less full shade and a clay soil. It’s dying, where should I move it?

And I planted this other plant from bulbs I had lying around…can’t remember for the life of me what it is. Please can you help identify it?

Have you watered the hydrangeas? They like moist soil. The clue is in the name - hydrangea!

The other one looks like a dahlia

LunaLoveFood · 30/06/2023 16:43

It just looks really thirsty. Give it a really good water and it will have perked up by tomorrow.

If you have been watering check that the plant isn’t rootbound (if it had been in a garden centre pot for too long it could be). Tease out the roots and add some compost to the clay to break it up a bit and replant. The position sounds fine to me.

Dahlia looks fine!

Might be worth digging the hydrangea out, sticking it in a bucket of water then digging a much bigger/deeper hole for it. Fill the hole with really good compost and then replant.

MrsCremuel · 30/06/2023 16:54

I think this is it, I’ve been regularly watering it and the soil is damp. Thanks!

@MarissaG yes it was a dahlia, thanks!

Just trim off dead flowers and more will appear.. you may have over watered it 😬

Hydrangeas are funny old plants, mine never really do that well either!

I'm guessing you bought the hydrangea this year in flower? In which case the flowers were forced on early, so are probably just going over early. The leaves don't look too bad.

lovemycbf · 30/06/2023 22:51

Mine was literally dying last summer like this
I dug it up again and put in a large ceramic pot with some feed and it's so full of flower buds it's going to be very pretty this year

The leaves of the hydrangea look ok it's just the flowers going over. But good advice to replant in more compost, some plants struggle to push roots out into clay. I had a hydrangea that suddenly found itself in full sun when a neighbour's tree came down. The leaves would flop down completely vertical as soon as we got decent weather. It needed so much watering it seemed indecent and it got the chop. (I've become quite ruthless!)

The dahlia looks like it may be mystic fantasy or totally tangerine.
