Bush/hedge for hot SE facing spot and poor soil

Looking for suggestions of what to put in the spot by our front door if anyone has any suggestions please? It's East facing and has the sun for an awful lot of the day because it's not shaded until the sun moves right round.

I'm not sure how deep the soil goes, but it's pretty poor, although I plan to dig a fair bit out and replace it.

We had ilex there but it never took or grew and finally died.

We'd like something bushy and evergreen, preferably low maintenance. One type to just run the length.

Does anything fit the bill?

My box shrubs are in full sun and poor new build soil and they're thriving. I do feed and water them a bit, but other than that I just watch them grow. Box is a bit mundane I suppose, but I like it and it seems hardy.

Mediterranean herbs like lavender, rosemary, sage, marjoram, thyme & oregano all love sun & heat, & poor soil. Just need light pruning to keep in shape.
In your position I'd go for lavender or rosemary - plus bees etc love them.

was going to suggest rosemary as well as seem to have mixed results with lavender.... or thyme if you want lower growing....

Thanks for the replies! We went for Ilex instead of box as there's a lot of Box Blight around here, but very happy with that look. Perhaps we should just try it!

I didn't choose lavender because I love how it looks in 'full growth' but I don't really want to be left all autumn/winter with a load of dead looking stumps after it's been cut back

Escalonia makes a lovely hedge and has a flowering period too.

I went with IIex the other day. Wanted some spheres but after spending the week picking tens and tens of caterpillers off my cone I couldn’t face it.
