Clematis montana - will it grow back or is it dead?

There are no leaves on it at all. Not sure where to go from here... Thinking maybe cut it right back and see what happens next spring?

It got snowed on and came away from the fence so had to be cut. I clearly made a mistake. If I'm honest I didn't realise it leafs and flowers on new growth.

Mine is much smaller than yours, only having a couple of stems as I transplanted it from my mother's garden last year. It looked as dead as yours but it started sprouting from the root about 10 days ago and now has 8 leaves and is about 8 inches tall. I think the hard frost really set it back. Mine only gets sun in the afternoon and evenings. I would wait a few more weeks before giving up on it

Mine died from frost. Leaf buds all got frozen off. Now sprouting new growth from roots after I cut it right back.

Mine also looks the same! But it's starting to grow back from the bottom. It doesn't normally do that so I agree , it must have been the weather last year/harsh spring

I’d cut that right back, you don’t have anything to lose, I’ve done it before and it’s sprouted new shoots from roots. Do it now rather than later as it flowers on previous year’s growth.

Hang in there ! Clematis are notorious for playing dead then sprouting up from their roots. Cut it right back to the ground carefully and you might see some growth. I thought I had lost two salvias and an agapanthus in that cold winter, but they are showing tiny little signs of life, critical care still, but breathing unaided. I am pretty sure my banana has gone beyond all help though. Still, it was a reduced item at the very end of autumn, so I never really got too attached to it!

Clematis need a cool head and warm feet. Even if frost, if you keep the area around the roots covered (fleece, shrubs etc) it should prevent frost damage to the plant.

Probably risk more cutting then ... 😬

Same happened to mine. Lovely last year all over an archway
this year it started shooting then died. Cut it back to about 3 feet tall and it had a few shoots but now it has loads of big shoots coming up from the ground

Risk more cutting it? Are you not reading the responses xx

Imred · 10/06/2023 22:14
