Pathetic seedlings

Anyone without a greenhouse suffer this affliction? My cosmos are so wimpy and slow growing. I've only just pinched out the 2nd tier of true leaves. It'll be Autumn by the time they flower! Red sunflowers also just seemingly not growing...boo. Am I being too impatient?

Great name for a band...
Sorry can't help with the actual
Issue!

Same here, and quite a few cosmos I have planted out have been attacked by slugs.
I’m focusing on sowing perennials for next year now 😐

Yes! Exactly the same, the seedlings came through quickly were potted on and now don't want to grow. I'm still waiting to pinch out for the first time on some of them.

Pippy2022 · 08/06/2023 11:18

Maybe now things are cooking up temperature wise they will rise to the challenge abit more!

I'm still bringing mine in at night or putting a plastic cloche over them. Slugs aren't going to have the last laugh!

Greenhouses are such gamechangers...sigh

My seedlings have been a universal wash out this year, I've just bought some John Innes to see if that makes a difference. I've got them in a cold frame so they should be ok, not sure what's going on!

Yes, I've previously complained about my Brussels. My seed potatoes have come on great though, they're in bags of the same compost. However, the spuds had some of that granular plant food mixed in. I've watered my Brussels with some high nitrogen plant food and I'm going to get some rotted manure to top dress. Someone suggested if the compost wasn't properly ready it would be using a lot of the nitrogen rotting down further. That might explain why my sweet peas have been doing okay because they fix their own nitrogen from the atmosphere.

I appear to have spent a fortune on plants this year as most of my seedlings failed to thrive. I'm blaming the peat free compost because nothing else seems to have changed.

Pippy2022 · 08/06/2023 12:06

It's been really cold though compared to last year I think.

Mine are the same. They’ll get there. They’re more use as a late summer flower, there’s less around.

Yep. It will be the peat-free compost for sure.

My tomatoes are embarrassing! A girlfriend came over and we had a seedling afternoon months ago- hers are well over a foot tall now, mine are weedy and a few inches at best 😂 pathetic!

Pippy2022 · 09/06/2023 20:40

I had to chuck my tomato seedlings as they germinated and then just sat there not growing but seemingly not dying either! I bought a load instead! 4 year old was pretty dissapointed with the process.

Mine too! And Lantan plug plants haven’t grown at all, they’re no bigger than when I potted them up 7 weeks ago. They’re like miniature versions about 3” high 🤬
