Why hasn't my peony flowered this year?

I have several peonies that have been in place at least 10 years. They always bloom beautifully. Not this year. One has a few flowers but the others have no flowers at all. I've not done anything different this year to previous years. Any ideas anyone?

Were you in a drought area last summer? Maybe it was stressed, and didn't get enough water. If the plant looks healthy enough, I'd just wait and see what it does next year.

I hadn't thought of that. It was spectacularly dry last year. Drought area and south facing garden.

Mine is younger and has a bud but it's refusing to open! Everywhere I look other people have amazing ones and mine is just....not.

I think they will in a week

If it is a young plant and only has one bud (is it the first bud it has ever grown?), I would chop it off and let the plant establish more roots. Peonies take quite a few years to start pumping out flowers.

I have been wondering this! None of mine have flowered ( I have 4 in total!) and I'm devastated 😂 we are also south facing so it must be drought

Another cause is a late freeze in April or May. My peony (edge of Scottish highlands) has been very late in producing buds as a result of this, and it’s doubtful whether these buds will actually open into blooms now.

Oh that's odd - I was just thinking the other day that mine hadn't flowered either. The cold weather obviously explains it!

HelloSunshine12 · 08/06/2023 09:39

Mine has flowered quite well. You didn't cut lots of flowers off last year, did you? My garden normally flowers quite late but my peony has done OK. I don't think I watered it last year really BUT I do sprinkler the lawn. And it's possible that could have given it a little water here and there.

I thought mine was a cream peony but the flowers are pink this year! I've had it at least four or five years...

I get this problem. I’m just going to feed it and that might help.
Mine probably needs a sunnier spot.

One flower here. It’s been there 7 years and never had more than 2 or 3. I may dig it up and plant something else.

If they've been there a while have you given them some compost mulch or food recently?
