How do I make my lawn look lush?

I'd like to make my lawn look lush but I know nothing about gardening. I have patches of lovely green grass and patches of yellow grass and areas that probably need more grass. What should I do? Lawn feed? Grass seed? I mow it maybe every 1-2 weeks. All tips welcome!

For Lushness you need more rain than we're currently getting, as well as soil conditions that encourage lushness. Are your yellow/sparse patches permanent or do they come and go? Is the ground compacted in them?

Mow it at least every 2 weeks, but not too short (middle setting on most mowers). Pray for rain.
