Rose dying?

Dodie66 · 02/06/2023 13:22

I have a larger rambling rose that goes all along over my lounge window about 10 feet long and the same along the fence at the side. It’s huge and every year has loads of blooms. This year it looks like it’s dying. The leaves are going brown with rusty spot and falling off. It’s taken years to get it that big. Anything I can do to rescue it. I’m keeping it well watered. I don’t want to use chemicals on it and it will be difficult to get up there to spray it. Pics attached

Maybe dry and stressed. I'd give the ground a good soak then mulch with old compost or bark or straw to reduce drying. Adding a liquid feed like seaweed to the water would do no harm. Repeat the watering regularly and feed weekly and see...

What's it planted in @Dodie66?

LadyGardenersQuestionTime · 03/06/2023 09:09

Do you ever cut it back?

Dodie66 · 03/06/2023 09:14

To answer your questions. I’m watering it daily now as it’s so dry here, yes I do cut it back every year after flowering. It’s planted in the border under the window, I think it’s been there about 30 years now and this is the first year I’ve had problems. I have seaweed feed so will give it some of that. Thanks for your advice.

@Dodie66 Have a good look at the trunk of the rose lower down. You might find that it has been damaged by something, or has a disease such as canker. I lost a beautiful rose to canker a few years ago.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 03/06/2023 18:25

Or do you have a neighbour that's more of an Astroturf and weedkiller around the sides type of person?

It's how my beautiful (and looked after) rambling rose that always bloomed on my daughter's birthday died.

Dodie66 · 03/06/2023 19:03

It’s not near a neighbours fence so nothing from them. @tailinthejam the trunk of the rose looks ok. We did have a rat problem ealier this year where the rat dug a tunnel around the back of the rose but we filled it in. Hoping it wasn’t that. How would I know it’s canker? Thank you all for your suggestions. A lot of the underneath branches are dead so I will prune them out

@Dodie66 Canker shows up as knobbly lesions and cracks in the bark, and if it encircles the trunk completely then that's curtains for the tree or shrub. If you google images of tree canker that will give you an idea.

@tailinthejam thank. Iwill have a look tomorrow

I wonder if you’re overwatering it? I really don’t think roses need daily watering. It’s very hot where I am (hasn’t rained in weeks) and I give mine a good soak once a week, maybe a light water once or twice in between

Dodie66 · 04/06/2023 11:48

@TheDuchessOfMN i hadn’t been watering regularly it till this week and I only did that because it looked like it was dying. I only give it a small amount. It looked like it was dying before I started watering it. A lot of the buds look like they won’t open now
