Has anyone built a wooden pergola?

I’ve been shopping around for one but they seem insanely expensive so thought I’d have a go at making one.

has anyone done it? What wood did you use? Where did you find plans etc? How long did it take?

DH built one using supplies from Wickes, I had priced up kits from eBay, Etsy & the internet in general and iirc it worked out so much cheaper it was worth the effort. It’s one attached to the house so just has two legs at the front bolted to the patio. He just laid out the beams for the front supports to space the crossbeams and kind of did it himself so no plans I’m afraid.

I have waiting to be put up. It was delivered a few months ago, but I have been clearing land to make room for it. I think it cost me around £250 inc. delivery. It was supersized. Clearance deal as far as I recall. However, if you want to put one up by yourself, why not look on youtube as there are lots of 'how to' guides there.

I've built several. I used douglas fir as it doesn't need treating for the outer structure, and put metal rods for extra plant support, as I liked it better than lots of woods. I didn't use plans, I just made them up myself, it's not hard. You just need some uprights, some thick beams to go across and some thinner beams (or metal in my case) going along.
