I've been trying to work out what this tree / shrub is with my plant ID app but it keeps telling me it's things that look nothing like it! It commonly says it's cape ivy but it's definitely not ivy. It's about 4m tall and has been flowering for a few weeks. It's well established and must have been planted by the previous owners years ago.

I think it needs a good prune but as I don't know what it is I don't know how to care for it... any ideas?!!

Kerria japonica? Are the flowers a bit like pompoms?

EBearhug · 29/05/2023 22:57

I don't think the flowers are kerria, but not sure what it is. I thought mi.osa, but the leaves aren't right for that.

It looks like Azara Dentata?

friskybivalves · 29/05/2023 23:27

Or azata serrata?

Ugh azara - autoincorrect!

MereDintofPandiculation · 30/05/2023 09:18

but it's definitely not ivy Cape ivy isn’t ivy either Grin It’s a shrub in the Asteraceae family which has leaves shaped like ivy leaves. Clearly the apps got it wrong on leaf shape alone

@friskybivalves suggestion of Azara looks good. S African plant but sold in Britain.

Azara from Burncoose Nurseries

Yes it's Azara! Thank you so much @MellowMelly and @friskybivalves. It looks just like that. It has a traditional tree shape but then lots of small 'branches' around the trunk which need pruning I think. So I'll do that after it finishes flowering
