It’s Creeping Cinquefoil, an absolute pain to get rid of! It spreads by runners and develops very deep roots.

Perfect thanks. Yes I had noticed the deep roots!

And has absolutely beautiful yellow flowers, like a single yellow rose.

I used to confuse it with a buttercup until I noticed the petals of cinquefoil are 5 distinct petals while the petals of a buttercup form a goblet (that I imagine filled with butter, to remind me which one is which)

Buttercup petals have a particular glossiness caused, if I remember correctly , by a surface layer of transparent cells.

Buttercup petals are also separate but as you say, they don’t lay flat, they form a cup.

Very very small flowers, though. And not for long.

Not that small!! About wild primrose size. And probably longer lasting than lilac.
