Planting supermarket herbs

I’ve got a thyme pot, the kind sold in the fruit & veg aisles.

I know they’re grown in crowded pots & have had some luck splitting basil and mint pots into quarters & potting into bigger pots.

I’ve got a common thyme pot that I want to put into my garden (baking hot south-facing chalk). Do I split this one into four as well or should I plant it whole?

I'd see how it looks once you get it out of the pot - if it seems to have multiple stems and splits easily, then do.

Thank you! I ended up slicing it four ways with a spade & popped it in the garden, and will keep the water up to it this week.
