Chelsea Flower Show - BBC coverage

Yamadori · 22/05/2023 16:26

Is it just me, or has the BBC totally lost the plot? I'm currently watching this afternoon's coverage.

It's a flower show for crying out loud. I want to see the flowers, plants and gardens, not suffer endless wittering from the presenters and whatever slebs they can drag up.

I think the 7.30pm is usually more about the gardens

TheSpottedZebra · 22/05/2023 16:46

The first day is always like that. And it's 80% the usual celebs: Lumley, Dench, Will Young, DIY SOS man (avec whichever young woman is current). Vanessa Feltz, Gaby Roslin...

Maybe no Walliams this year, so there's nice.

Yamadori · 22/05/2023 16:59

They seem to aim it at 'daytime tv' watchers who know diddly-squat about gardening. I'm not usually at home to see the afternoon programmes, so I shan't bother again.

The daytime coverage is flannel. Ignore it, 80% of it is a nonsense.

Ignore it. Even the evenings have too much celebrity nonsense but at least it’s more focused on gardens.

Inawoodtherelived · 22/05/2023 18:13

They do this every sodding year and it gets worse and worse. Even in the evenings poor Monty is desperately trying to keep the conversation pertinent to horticulture. It’s like in the eyes of the young, probably male, producer , having one of the most amazing flower shows in the world to film and investigate isn’t interesting enough! I couldn’t give a sod about what any celebrity thinks about it! I’m interesting in the sodding plants!

JamMakingWannaBe · 22/05/2023 22:36

Awards will be given out tomorrow so watch out for the fake interviews which are (surprise!) interrupted to hand out a medal!
Buzzword bingo:

  1. It's our 10th gold!
  2. Maybe next year
  3. There's always the public vote.
Menopants · 22/05/2023 22:37

Monty still has though. Excellent suit

Lallybroch · 22/05/2023 22:38

I always want to see far more of the smaller gardens as they are more real and relevant to the majority of the public than the show gardens but you hardly get to see any of them.

Yamadori · 22/05/2023 22:46

Someone I know could be in line for a gold, fingers crossed.

I was literally saying the same this evening but more as a general comment over the hype of the show. I went Hampton Court last year and it was wonderful, purely all about gardens and plants. Chelsea is turning into a fashion show/circus!

iwantawisteriathisyear · 22/05/2023 22:53

I get really irritated every year, that as soon as the medals are given out, we only see those gardens. All the quirky, interesting gardens that were glimpsed on day one are never seen again. It gets so boring seeing the same gardens and same designers.

WednesdaysPlaits · 22/05/2023 22:59

i don’t know whether there is some tension between Monty and Joe. It felt a little like there was.

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 22/05/2023 23:03

Didn't see this afternoon but yesterday's preview was much better than tonight's coverage.
I suppose it's on every night this week so there will be a bit of what what we want and a bit of what we don't each night.
I really hope they feature the 2 sisters who grow mushrooms on jeans and books again, they were fascinating.

You reckon? 😃😃

BewitchedBotheredandBewildered · 22/05/2023 23:13

I hope Monty doesn't wear his suit/not suit every night.

He looked a bit silly sitting down, but deeply daft standing up walking around!

Sagittariusrising · 23/05/2023 15:33

@BewitchedBotheredandBewildered they were fabulous and have won a Gold so I'm really happy for them. I'm going on Friday and really looking forward to seeing their stand.

Yamadori · 23/05/2023 16:31

Does anyone know if they have released a full list of medal winners - not just the show gardens etc, but all the other exhibits in the Great Pavilion as well? I can only find lists of winning gardens.

Yamadori The Great Pavillon awards are shown on the RHS webpage - scroll down past the Garden awards and there is links there to open the full list

@JustAnotherSod Thanks for that, I couldn't see for looking. It was under floral awards and I assumed it was the flower arranging section.

No problem - hope your friend is pleased with the results!

It was nice to see Chris Beardshaw last night! A great gardener!

PleaseJustText · 24/05/2023 22:50

I've been enjoying the coverage but I don't think there are as many wow gardens as last year. The Japanese garden was beautiful though. Do they publish the plans for them?

Marchintospring · 24/05/2023 23:57

They all look a bit samey these days; wild flower planting, a hut or fantastically sleek structure and a water feature with rusted metal somewhere.
They definitely used to be a bit more gimmicky ( and interesting).

I agree. They’re all merging into one.
