Looks like some kind of ornamental grass.

It's a type of ornamental grass. I don't know the variety.

I think it's ugly too!

It’s a carex, brown leaved sedge, comes form New Zealand. It’s not dead, that’s how they are.
they were very trendy in pots a few years ago.

GreenIsle · 21/05/2023 17:07

Is it supposed to be this colour or should it be all green

It looks a bit dry. Did you cut it down at the end of winter?

They have brown leaves, but more of a copper colour. They have plumes of flowers later too.

It’s an ornamental grass as others said, you’re supposed to cut it back for winter.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 21/05/2023 18:45

I can’t tell whether it’s died over winter (many grasses and sedges did in the very cold spell) or is just slow to get going. Try pulling your fingers through it. That should remove any dead bits and show you whether anything’s left.

Carex comans. Sedges do flower, but not flowers as you know them. basically that particular one is grown for its bronze foliage, but its not to everyone's taste. They look a lot better grown among a mixture of sedges, so a bronze highlight among the green and blue-grey.

It'll self seed into your lawn if you don't watch it. I'd dig it out.

Not necessarily. Mine seeds into gravel, but wouldn’t grow in my lawn even when I tried planting it in there.
