Streptocarpus mutation?

Hello I'd be grateful for some input.

I've had this streptocarpus for 6 years now - it's not looking at it's absolute healthiest at the moment (probably my fault) but it's just grown this weird really long stamen thing in place of a flower. What is this? What's going on here and should I be doing something about it? Worried this is death throes or something.

Mine aren't looking as well as usual but my friend's plants are fine and her plants are babies from mine. Are you watering it from the bottom? I think we are not supposed to get the top wet.

It’s a seedpod! Let it ripen, then you could sow the dust-like seeds in the hope of getting baby plants.

NanTheWiser, might that take too much strength away from the plant? I find that leaf cuttings are a good way of propagating streptocarpus. I am going to put mine in a sunnier spot and hope that they improve. They are normally much bigger at this time of year.

@Freddiefan its entirely up to you! Leaf cuttings do work very well (I used to grow them), but you might get quite different plants from seeds, if the pod was pollinated by a different plant.

Oh thanks v much for the info! So glad it's not dying. As you can probably tell I'm a total gardening novice but have somehow kept this one alive up till now!

I've always watered it from the top I didn't know! I just neglected it a bit recently it normally looks much healthier this time of year.

Oh, a baby thread! Even if it's self pollinated it might not breed true. You could get anything, although it'll probably be a Streptocarpus.

OP it's lovely.

How exciting! Thanks I'll definitely sow them and see what I get!
