I've downloaded two only to discover they're paid apps. GRRRR!

  1. the number of dubious ids on this board that have been produced by apps

  2. the mode of operation

I haven't seen any posts about dubious plant apps but unless you foolishly eat a poisonous plant you dont recognise I can't see that this is an issue worth worryng about is iit?

A rubbish app would have bad reviews so you wouldn't download it would you?

Is there a plant and weed app that has no monthly subscription

I use plantnet, it makes suggestions it it's not sure. If for some reason I still wasn't sure I'd Google the options for more info

Is there a reason you think it would be mis identifying?

Far easier to just post a photo on here, and get people who know what it is to tell you.

Someone had purple toadflax come up as rosemary on her app the other day.

Yes there is a free plant app. It's called the Gardening topic on Mumsnet.

Plenty of experienced and knowledgeable gardeners on here.

I think the nicest thing about asking here is that it's rarely just an id you get; people add their experiences and tips and it can be the start of an interesting chat.

I've tried a few apps, but still come back here if I'm stuck.

That was me 😁Even a horticultural dullard like me knew it wasn't rosemary.

I agree that MN Gardening topic is far more helpful than any app.

It’s not about good apps and rubbish apps. It’s that all apps are capable of throwing up really bad answers. They’re good for a starting point, but you need to do some further research to check the answer. They’re not recognising a plant, they’re taking a pattern of coloured pixels and comparing it to other patterns of coloured pixels.

It may not be worth worrying about (though if you don’t care if the answer is right, why bother with an app in the first place?) but it can mean you don’t treat the plant appropriately.

The other day we had an app identify a willow seedling as mint.

Try the id facility on an iPhone, use google image search, or plantnet. But only as a starting point for further research, not for a definitive answer.
