What the heck are these?

These enormous things have recently popped up in the lawn. What in earth are they? And do I want to keep them?

Please ignore the state of the grass, the whole place is a (slightly overwhelming) work in progress!

Google lens suggests that it is a sand leek. Pretty purple flower head.

maximist · 14/05/2023 14:03

They look like alliums to me. They'll have lovely purple flowers very soon.

MidlifeWhatNow · 14/05/2023 14:12

Oh that's exciting- they do have a purple tinge to them so fingers crossed that's what they are. I trued Google lens but it came up with some Sri Lankan native phallus plant 😁

Excuse my ignorance but will they self-seed?

Hiya- their bulbs and (especially in good soil) will produce little bulblets. If it's Purple Sensation (one of the most common ones) they can reproduce quite quickly- and become very prolific. If the soil is poorer you may not get that- but the fact it's appeared may suggest there was perhaps once a border in that spot. If you want to check, after it has flowered and the foliage has died down, lift the bulb and see if it has bulblets attached. Enjoy!

It looks like 3 cornered leek to me. A very invasive weed. If it is rhen the leaves will have a very thick vein down them and an almost triangular cross section and the flowers will be white.

Geneticsbunny · 15/05/2023 13:36

If they come out purple then you are safe!

Wyndam · 15/05/2023 14:22

I agree, I think its the Sicilian Honey garlic which is a relative to alliums.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/05/2023 14:35

Google lens etc really need to include geographical and seasonal data in their categorisation!
I'm really just joining the thread in the hope of a photo of whatever emerges. The long bud looks like some I saw in a nice garden this weekend, I was wondering what they were - the 'normal' flowering alliums were either in bloom or had more spherical buds.

Definitely not. I'd go with an allium and I think the lawn looks lovely long with the flowers in.

Please come back with pics when they open, I'm overly invested in these now 😆

Mutabiliss · 15/05/2023 15:55

Posting so I can find out what they are, too 😁They're not Purple Sensation, too pointy.

I agree with Allium siculum. It's a pretty nice plant, can grow in sun or shade. Should increase over time if you let them seed after flowering. Bumblebees really love them too.

ComeIntoTheGardenMaud · 15/05/2023 23:52

I think nectaroscordum - mine are just about to flower.

I agree as well, mine are just about to flower and yes they are absolute nectar to the bees, so please keep them.

They're definitely allium siculum - these were taken today! Very excited to see them all in full flower, hopefully soon 😊
