Complete Dunce - Weeds or Plants?

Complete garden dunce here.

Inherited raised beds all a bit overwhelmed with green but not sure how to identify weeds from plants. 🤦🏽‍♀️

I know the purple thing is a wallflower and the climber is a clematis but that's the beginning and end of my knowledge.

Specifically circled plants might be weeds?

Can anyone help? Thank you Green fingered Ones.

Your purple flower looks like a Scabious ( a flower ) not a wallflower.

RuthTopp · 12/05/2023 10:33

Now I've looked at all your beds you have wallflower & Scabious , sorry for my error.

SlightlyJaded · 12/05/2023 10:35

Thank you.

Is the scabious 'Item 1" in picture one please? Can I cross it off the 'might be a weed" list?

Thank you

I'm going with your wallflower id, OP.

"Weed" No 1 appears to be astrantia, usually gets quite a bit bigger so assume its only young.

"Weed" 2 could be a willow herb (weed) but it could equally be a flower eg campanula so id wait and see.

"Weed" 3 is a bit baffling but my guess is that it is an apple tree that had been cut back to soil level and resprouted. If so that's a bit of an odd choice unless the raised bed is very large and deep.

ValerieDoonican · 12/05/2023 10:49

*Not actually campanula! But it does look familiar as a garden flower, just not one I grow! Hopefully someone will recognise it though!

RuthTopp · 12/05/2023 11:02

The spacious is the purple/ p inky one not circled. Agree with Astrantia , they are nice flowers with an almost papery feel.

DRS1970 · 12/05/2023 11:03

A weed is just a plant you don't want. If you think something looks nice, keep it - it doesn't matter what it is tbh.

hoochycrone · 12/05/2023 11:03

Could 2 be penstemon? Mine looks a bit like that atm.

Throwncrumbs · 12/05/2023 11:07

Aaand looks like a strawberry

MarissaG · 12/05/2023 11:08

Definitely astrantia in this pic. But also looks like some bindweed so whip that out including as much root as possible.

  1. Astrantia. Not a weed.
  2. Not sure, but could be Veronicastrum (not a weed).
  3. I guess Hydrangea Annabelle which is a type that is cut back close to ground level and then re sprouts. Not a weed.
MarissaG · 12/05/2023 11:12

Does this one smell if you rub the leaves? Looks a bit like lemon verbena?

Or Veronicastrum?

LightlySearedontheRealityGrill · 12/05/2023 12:06

Could be Solidago, golden rod, if it comes out in yellow flowers later. Which behaves like a weed in my garden.

SlightlyJaded · 12/05/2023 13:05

Thanks so much. Will get that bindweed sorted.

So... number 3 is also in the opposite bed I think - the third photo of my OP. It's bloody massive and everwhere. So far suggestions are apple tree and hydrangea but I don't think it's either of those. I'm tempted to yank it out as it's just an abundance of leaves, but don't want to kill it if it's suddenly going to do something beautiful and clever.

Any more ideas on that one?

Thank you all so much.

Get a plant app
You just take a picture and it tells you what it is. How to care for it and if it's looking poorly it tells you how to make it better 😊
I use one called picture this

Whatevergetsyouthroughthenight · 12/05/2023 13:46

Checked your photo no 3 against the Hydrangea Annabelle in my garden. I’d put money on it being Hydrangea Annabelle so don’t pull it out, it will have stunning flowers in July.

Daftasabroom · 12/05/2023 13:58

I wondered whether 2 might be weed weed? A bit early maybe.

MereDintofPandiculation · 12/05/2023 20:43

The wallflower is to the left of the Astrantia, and the Scabious is between the Astrantia and no 2.

I feel I know no 3 but nothing’s coming to mind. No 2 could be one of several things

Figrolls14 · 12/05/2023 21:13

Astrantia, lemon verbena, philadelphus?

MereDintofPandiculation · 13/05/2023 10:28

Not Philadelphus. Vein pattern wrong, and Philadelphus I don’t think are white downy underneath, but I’m still in my dressing gown so I’m not going out to look!

bellac11 · 13/05/2023 10:38

You have scabious and wallflower.

We grow some 'weeds' as plants, like purple toadflax.

Im also on the look out for those tall white plants that you often see on the side of motorways/A roads, not sure what they're called, they seem to grow quite tall

MonumentalLentil · 15/05/2023 14:12

The Scabious is the one with the lilac coloured round flowers, bees love them.
