Looks like Virginia Creeper to me?

HaroldMeaker · 07/05/2023 14:34

I think that’s sycamore. They are basically weeds.

Highlyflavouredgravy · 07/05/2023 14:35

Ash
It will spread everywhere if you don't keep on top of it

TheIsleOfTheLost · 07/05/2023 14:36

It's a sycamore, or close relation from the maple family. Not something you want growing close to your house.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 07/05/2023 14:37

Self seeded sycamore. Weeds in my garden. As are ash

I'd agree on both points.

It’s sycamore. Prolific seeders

tailinthejam · 07/05/2023 14:40

Another vote for sycamore seedling. A bugger to get out once they reach that size, too!

Cherryblossom200 · 07/05/2023 14:46

Thanks! I'll get rid of it! 😂

It’s not a sycamore, it’s too “pointed” for that. It has a few large teeth, sycamore has more teeth, and smaller teeth, and a more roundish look to the leaf lobes. It’s a Norway Maple.

Both sycamore and Norway Maple are Acers.

An ash has compound leaves made up of small oval leaflets in opposite pairs along a central spine.

If you can OP, pull it up gently and pot it. It has the potential to be a full grown mature tree somewhere, in the right place. Just not up against your wall!
You could even leave it outside your garden if someone wanted to take it. If someone had adequate space to allow for mature growth, it would be lovely. We need all the trees we can get.

Twotothreeagain · 07/05/2023 20:28

It's a sycamore, I've just spent the whole afternoon pulling them out of the garden!

Except it’s not, it’s a Norway Maple

viques · 07/05/2023 20:31

Sycamore. Pull it out soon, as soon as their roots get established they grip like steel. They are very easy to pull out when they only have four leaves, if you have one seedling you probably have more, they germinate very well!

It’s a sycamore with a fancy name , and anyway this one has seeded next to a brick wall so needs to come out.

anythinginapinch · 07/05/2023 20:38

Sycamore. Get rid, as they say

It’s a different species! I guess you mean that it has similar habits, but that’s a bit like calling a squirrel a “tree rat”. Just because it self seeds, is too big for a garden and looks a bit like a sycamore doesn’t make it a sycamore!

I’m having a hard enough battle here with all the people who can’t be bothered to take a proper look at the leaf, without comments like “sycamore with a fancy name” Grin

Norway Maple = Acer platanoides.
Sycamore = Acer pseudoplatanoides

Cherryblossom200 · 07/05/2023 21:49

Which one is it?

I cut it down to the end of the stalk for the time being. I'd love a tree in my garden 😢 but it's right up next to my garage.

Norway maple, Acer platanoides. Have a look at the two links I posted, and you'll see the difference in leaf shape.

Honeyroar · 07/05/2023 22:00

It’s a sycamore. They’re rife this year. Bloody everywhere in my garden.

kirinm · 07/05/2023 22:01

Sycamore self seeding and a total pain in the arse.
