Identify this plant and stop pest

Hey there does anyone know what the attached plant is? It's only just grown again this year. Last year it was decimated by a pest - something that looked like loads of grey maggots swarmed it and ate all the leaves. Very gross looking. Anyway does anyone know how to stop that pest and can you identify the plant/pest?

I can see lots of black elongated flies around it now.

Solomon’s seal, aka Polygonatum - I’m afraid I don’t know what the pests are, though, @Lemonycakage

Do you mean caterpillars?

You beat me to it, Gatekeper! Mine have had it in previous years, but not last year.

Apparently Solomon's seal has its own sawfly!

Ah damn not refreshing the page!

Thank you everyone! Anyone had any success getting rid of the pest?

Go round daily and pick them off.

Try to identify the eggs and squash them.

GretaGood · 04/05/2023 18:50

they decimate mine too.
Perhaps next year put a cover over the soil as I suspect that is wehre they come from, damp cardboard or something like that so they can't reach the plants.

Is the sawfly a new thing? I used to grow this years ago & didn't have any problems with it. (South coast of England)

Choconut · 04/05/2023 19:11

Yes one clump of ours gets it every year, the other round the corner from it never does. No idea why.

Don’t think so. I have a book published in the 80s which I think has it in.

Ooh Solomon Seal is my favourite plant in the garden. I've got two varieties,a giant one and a miniature version, no idea about their proper names.
The bain of my life is Sawfly larvae, I get them every year and they're a pain in the pants !
I just go around picking them off and squashing them.
Even the birds don't like to eating the miserable, grey little blighters.

Squiblet · 04/05/2023 21:05

I dug up all my Solomon's seal in the end, because those same caterpillars reduced them to shreds every single year. And I hated squishing them. Why couldn't they eat a nice fresh dandelion instead?

Floribundaflummery · 04/05/2023 21:06

When I had gooseberry sawfly I got rid of them by spraying with diluted fairy liquid, picking off and letting my hens at them. It worked really well.
