Hello, looking for tips or suggestions regarding slugs and an easy / cheap / eco way to keep them off the veg plants ?

Homebase sell white chalky slug repellent grains and brown pellets. I use a mixture of them.
It's not cheap but it's better for the hedgehogs and birds.

Beer traps. Bury jam jars in the earth, half fill with beer, place largish stone on top and wait til morning! Spoon out slugs and repeat. Don't be lazy and leave slugs in. They'll smell in no time.

Get the birds to do it for you is the most eco way. Get the birds into the garden and they can eat up the slugs. Net your fruit though!

Nematodes

Agree with PPs about encouraging birds and hedgehogs.
Night visit with a torch and pick them off (im too squeamish for this).
Co-planting. Bare earth means the only option is to eat your plants, try adding plants you are happy to sacrifice - like a delicious perimeter.
Examples:
Mix strawberries in with mint plants to protect the strawbs.
Leave alkanet next to brassicas to protect from caterpillars.
Also, allow courgettes to get as big as possible and have hairy stems planting out.

A friend of mine uses crushed eggshells on her veg patch. It must work, because she does it every year.

I forgot about beer traps. I wiped out my slugs one year. Felt quite guilty!
