Is this a Bourganvillea

Hi there,

I've just seen this on a photo and wondering what it is? I love bourganvillea but I know it's not great with this climate. So I'm looking for an alternative, I'm hopeful this might be a different plant which is more suitable to the UK climate!

Anyone know what it is please 😊

Looks more like a rose to me

I believe it is a bougainvillea - heated greenhouse/conservatory in most of the UK. What aspect in your garden (shade/sun) and which direction will the wall be facing?

LilyRed · 02/05/2023 22:02

I thought some of the leaves were rose leaves - maybe it's growing through a climbing rose?

ErrolTheDragon · 02/05/2023 22:03

The greyish leaves that are with the pink flowers look artificial to me... I think someone might have tarted up some greenery.

The fence I'm thinking of putting it on has full sun throughout the majority of the day. But I keep hearing it needs to be taken indoors during the winter.

If this is a rose then that would be fab.

I might ask a local garden centre 😊

Oh heavens they have hidden my reply - Rosa climbing Zephirine Drouhin - likes sun and smells divine

Oh and it is mostly thornless -a boon when you need to prune or shape it

I don't think that's what's shown in the photo, but it's probably what the OP wants.

I just would love to have something similar to a bourganvillea which is more hardy. So any recommendations are welcome 😊

Some of the suggestions are lovely - thank you 😊

I hope you find something to suit - good luck! I have had much success with roses from David Austin - the online catalogue is huge but easy to navigate

SarahAndQuack · 02/05/2023 22:43

That rhodochiton is not hardy, so not a good substitute.

What is it you particularly like about the bourganvillea that you like, OP? That might help. If you just want a climber in similar colours, maybe the pink everlasting pea? Or clematis?

Cherryblossom200 · 03/05/2023 07:06

I just love how it looks tropical, the flower is so pretty and I especially love the colour 😊
