Frost!

My pear tree is covered in blossom, tonight's frost is going to kill it isn't it? Can't really cover it. Last year was the first year we got some fruit off it, was hoping for more this year. Also got lots of growth on some of the perennials I planted last year, is this likely to die off? Not had much luck with perennials in the past they just disappear.

Watching.

I have 4 pears, two apples and multiple cherries all in blossom. I’ve also (stupidly) got a newish passion flower, and loads and loads of stuff in the greenhouse - including tomatoes in grow bags. They were so huge I planted them out last week when there was no forecast showing below 6c

very late spring I think. DH keeps going on about oaks and ashes and says we are going to have a poor summer!

Can u pop out and get something from b&q to cover it up?

Watching. I planted out a salvia hot lips yesterday and a hypericum and now I’m worried they’ll be killed off 😫

I've put a sheet over the pear tree that's in flower. The other two aren't out yet and the apples are all still in bud - that should be ok, shouldn't it?

There's loads that will get nipped but what can you do?

It has been such a rotten spring, though - not unusual here for there to be frosts into May, but usually it's warmer overall.

Isn't pear quite hardy? I've never ever covered mine ever and always get tons of fruit in the autumn. Have brought my pelargoniums back in and covered my dahlia with a bucket.

SarahAndQuack · 24/04/2023 19:54

That's hopeful, @ichundich. Whereabouts are you, and which pear? I'm in North Yorkshire and I took a gamble planting my pear in the open, not against a wall, so I am worried.

East of England, so probably slightly milder. In the end it only went down to about 1 degree here last night. Hope your blossoms are alright.
