Help! Will my garden get any sun?

We’re about to purchase a new build but my only concern is the north facing garden. Can anyone help confirm whether the back garden will get any sun, and if so where / what time? I’m hoping the top right may get some sun and we could create a patio area here. Please help! It’s plot 226 in the site plan below.

you'll be fine - the garden is big and you'll get sun from the west in the evening which is lovely. and the house won't get so hot if you don't have sun streaming in all day.

How tall is your house? On my new build development there are some tall 3 storey houses which are north facing and get basically no sunlight after midday even with a decent size garden. If house isn’t too tall you should be ok.

You might get a little at the top corner.

Ours is North facing and has some sun in the Mir ing from the side and in the evening from the other side but ours is long and dines have houses bordering the garden.

Depends how tall the buildings around you are. It looks like top left would get a little morning sun but bottom right looks like it could be a perfect evening sun spot.

For you to get hot afternoon sun it basically has to go over the top of your house to reach the back. The afternoon sun can only reach the part of your house that doesn’t cast a shadow. Can’t tell on a drawing.

My DD has south facing house and she has afternoon sun in her back garden but she has a really long garden.

Best advice I had was leave your garden for a year when you move in and plot the sun and shelter before you lay plans.

Thanks so much for replies so far, the house is only 2 floors, but plot 245 directly to the back is 3 floors. I was hoping the size of the garden would mean we would get sun at some part of the garden most of the day.

I think they even without the houses bordering the garden you'd be lucky to have some sun all day. Like I said ours is very long and not bordered and we definitely don't have some sun all day.

Depending on the houses around you you should be ok. Being detached will help.

I'm plot 75on the attached picture and north facing but the garden is very sunny.
The 2/3m closest to the house only gets late evening sun so the house isn't too hot and gives a bit shade on very sunny days.

I’m struggling with the offset compass, is it slightly NW or NE? We are NW, possibly more NWW and get fabulous sun in the garden, I love it.

BessieSurtees · 19/04/2023 20:27

I don’t reckon you will get sun for the whole day unless you can use the front. I think the evening sun will have set before it dips behind plot 245.

BessieSurtees · 19/04/2023 20:32

@trickyfriendsone your houses look like they have well spaced gardens with not much overlook from other buildings.

APurpleSquirrel · 19/04/2023 20:43

We have a north facing garden - plot 15. We get sun in the morning in the bottom half of the garden, it stays on the back fence & 2/3rds of the garden through the day as it generally reaches over the house, then as it gets into late afternoon the garage provides some shade, but we get full sun on the right-hand side of the garden until it sets.
The space nearest the house only gets sun in late afternoon. The bottom of the garden is in sun pretty much all day. The sides get shaded at parts either by the fence or garage.

We have a NW facing garden which looks like the same as you'll be getting. The top of the garden gets sun all day and from May onwards the patio near the house on the right gets sun from 3pm ish so is perfect for eating out. The bottom left nearest the house only gets sun in high summer from 5pm.

MereDintofPandiculation · 20/04/2023 09:53

245 is NW of you, so will take out late evening sun from about 8.30pm in the small part of the year when the sun sets in the NW.

From the garage onwards your garden will be reasonably sunny.

Toon92 · 20/04/2023 09:56

I have a north east facing garden, it’s annoying but I do get lovely morning sun and in peak summer there is some sunlight until 6/7pm. Good idea to build the patio where there’s the sunlight as we built ours right outside the house and the sun is off it by about 12.30.

Arigby · 14/06/2024 20:43

My house (plot 122) has a north facing rear garden and I. Wondering what sun id get. It's a corner plot so no houses directly to the east. Can anyone advise?

Looks like early morning sun, then from about 10 am to 4pm the house will be blocking the sun, then after that you’ll start to get the evening sun from west-ish
