Help with plant ID?

I've taken a close up of the leaves, one further back to show how it's growing and another further back to show the overall shape. It's in a boggy area where water runs off from the field next door.

The wood/ shape stayed through winter and the leaves are starting to grow (we're quite far north).

Thank you!

The bush is probably 1-1.5m high.

Can't help with identifying it sorry, but there's a really good free app called PlantNet which had been 100% correct for me.

Thank you. I keep getting red/black currant suggested, but I’m almost certain it’s not that (although it could be…). I have current bushes and they look different.

I would have said a flowering currant from the leaves

You will know it's a type of currant from the smell if you give it a good ruffle. Can't describe it but it's distinctive

Blackcurrants smell of blackcurrant when you scrape the stem.

The flowering type smell a bit different, I think, but still quite strong

TwoCoffeesandAMilkshake · 16/04/2023 18:53

Thank you. Flowering currant looks more like it.

My other currant bushes are much woodier and a different shape (albeit they have been cut back and this has been growing wild at the back of the garden).

Flowering currant is currently flowering in the UK though so would this not be flowering?

That said it definitely looks currant-y

The only thing zi can think of that looks similar is Guelder rose but i dont think thats what this is so maybe just an unflowering flowering currant?

Doh, totally should have taken that into account

Im north wales so im used to being 'behind' compared to gardeners I follow on instagram etc who all seem to be down south so my brain should have engaged

On the plus side you shouldnt have too mich longer to wait to see if it is flowering currant

I hope it is - the flowers look lovely (the whole place was so overgrown that I’m only just discovering plants that have been overgrown for years). This is only my second summer with the garden.

We have a huge flowering currant at the bottom of our garden and it is beautiful, one of my favorites so I hope yours is one too

We also inherited a very overgrown garden when we bought our house so spent ages googling plants

I feel, for the first time, that I can actually see what’s what. I’ve been clearing and tidying throughout the winter - keeping piles of leaves etc so that hopefully anything hibernating was safe. Things are starting to grow now and I am trying to find out what everything is!

Our viburnum opulus ( guelder rose ) looks like that now- not an expert though!
