Hello,

I currently have a dwarf /American wisteria in a wide but not terribly deep container against a south facing wall. Unsurprisingly, it's not been very happy and hated both the drought last summer and the frost this winter. Can't see a single leaf bud now, so I think it's dead and I'm going to ditch it.

What can I replace it with? It's a three storey blank white wall facing full south, so gets hot in summer and stays pretty warm in winter. I can't lift a paving stone as it's all bloody concrete underneath, so I need a climber that can go in a container. The planter I have currently is about 5ft long by 1ft tall and wide so need something with shallow roots. I'd love something to cloak the wall and my ideal would be Virginia Creeper, but don't think it would last long in the pot!

Can anyone think of the perfect plant, or is this mission impossible?

My brother has Virginia creeper in a pot and it has done fine but it is not south facing

Virginia creeper will grow anywhere, and it's fabulous.

Can you get a deeper pot? That would help a lot.

I have one in a similar situation. I planted it because a neighbour has a fabulous one.
Mine is in a very large planter, it can’t go into the ground due to a drainpipe.
It’s been growing there for 2 years and currently is just sprouting leaves. Don’t give up hope.

That is stunning! I have never seen one grown espalier before

That's stunning 😲😲😲

Is that actually growing in a pot?! (looks around for a wall that I could put one against)

No, I very much doubt it.

OP, I think you need a bigger pot.
