Weed or plant please?
This plant is thriving under a tree but am not sure if it’s a weed or a plant. Re e moved in here so new to this garden. Thanks.

Looks to me like cuckoo pint. White flower followed by red berries when flower dies. My dad had a few in his garden.

I think it's a weed.

Fourmoos · 11/04/2023 10:42

Cobblers123 you’re right I think and it’s toxic so it’s going! Thanks.

It is a cuckoo pint, a sort of arum. It will die down to a tuber after it ‘flowers’. They can be invasive, but they disappear completely by early summer , and they come up very easily. I’ve got loads under the trees.

It's a fascinating plant (holds flies prisoner), cousin to calla lilies I think.

Are you getting rid if your daffodils too?

Temperature inside spathe is slightly higher than outside, mimicking a rotting carcase.

What do you mean by “a weed”?

Presumably you don’t mean a native plant, because that applies to a lot of things that are grown in gardens, Lily of the Valley for example.

You don’t mean “arrived by itself” because that would make nonsense of the OP’s question.

you don’t mean “invasive “ because it isn’t.

So do you just mean “I wouldn’t want it in my garden”?

Frogsareflyinginfromthewest · 12/04/2023 10:54

"A weed is but an unloved flower" 😁

Our garden is full of 'em (weeds)....whatever you decide to do, happy gardening, it's so therapeutic isn't it?

Allthegoodnamesarechosen · 12/04/2023 10:57

Toxic? How?

Hazelnuttella · 12/04/2023 11:00

My gardening philosophy is to decide which “weeds” I quite like the look of and leave them be. If I clear the soil, another weed will grow and I might not like that one as much.

Can’t get on board with dandelions though.. they have to go.

Frogsareflyinginfromthewest · 12/04/2023 11:03

All of it is toxic I think, but especially when it produces berries. Dad used to call it Lords and Ladies.

Dandelions flower early and are great for insects, lovely swathes of yellow in the verges. The clocks are beautiful, fun and water repellent. They do seed prolifically but at least aren't toxic and don't spread by runners.

longtompot · 12/04/2023 12:20

In my mind a weed is a plant growing where you don't want it.

Which means”is this a weed” is not a question we can answer, since the decision is entirely the OPs. All we can do is identify it and reveal more of its habits. Then the OP has to decide if for her it’s a weed

Lots of it growing in my garden under trees. Yes it is cuckoo pint and yes it is very poisonous. I think that it is quite pretty though.
