New allotment excitement!

I got the keys to my new allotment yesterday and I’ll be working on it gradually as it needs quite a bit of work. I’ve got plans for the beds but the plot has a public footpath running around two sides. I’d like to plant something pretty but not a vegetable around the edges, that can withstand being pee’d on by many dogs. Not anything wildy poisonous obviously as I will be taking my young children. Something bright and colourful hopefully, easy to grow? Any ideas?

Congratulations on your new plot! I love my allotment. How about a strip of wildflowers around the edge of your plot? That will bring in insects which will help with pollination of other crops. Or if you want to screen off the path maybe a row of tall sunflowers? A different idea would be artichokes, which are big thistle type plants with attractive foliage. A lot of people grow them on the edge of plots because they take up quite a lot of space and need a permanent position.

Nasturtiums, marigolds, sweet peas, amaranth, lavender?

Ooh all good ideas! The plot comes to an end in a point, so I was thinking of having wildflowers in the end sort of triangle. I also love sweet peas but am actually leaning towards a row of dwarf sunflowers.
